Membership benefits include: programs and activities planned around the needs of members; opportunities for interaction between new and veteran writers, as well as industry professionals who serve writers; hosted and/or co-sponsored events to serve and/or promote Virginia writers; support of a teen division, the Young Virginia Writers Club; writing contests and publication opportunities in The Blue Ridge Anthology; and a monthly newsletter.
The mission of the Blue Ridge Writers Chapter is to support and stimulate the art, craft, and business of writing, as well as be an advocate for literary arts in the communities served by the Chapter.

A Little History
The name of the group was called the "Charlottesville Writers" when founded by local author Booton "Boo" Herndon on September 26, 1989. Early meetings featured discussions led by George Garrett, John Gardner, Jonathan Coleman, and Mike Williams (owner of what was then the Williams Corner Bookstore on the Charlottesville Downtown Mall). Meeting locations ranged from the Fry's Spring Beach Club to the Thomas Jefferson Memorial Unitarian Church to homes of various members.
On April 27, 1991, the Charlottesville Writers became the first chartered Chapter of the Virginia Writers Club, Inc. (VWC) which was founded in November 1918 by James Branch Cabell in Richmond, Virginia. The VWC had primarily existed as a Richmond club with Board members from around the state. Booton Herndon was serving on the VWC Board when they decided to branch out and establish regional Chapters throughout the state. Some of the first members of Booton Herndon's Charlottesville Writers are still members of the Chapter today!
Beginning in 1994, the meetings were held at the Barnes & Noble bookstore at Barrack's Road Shopping Center. In 2007, after a considerable growth spurt, several milestones were reached: The Chapter published its first Anthology; changed its name to the "Blue Ridge Writers Chapter"; and partnered with the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities to hold Chapter meetings in their conference room at the Boars Head Inn.
